SWANSBORO, NC – Any time you walk into Carteret County Speedway, there’s a sense of nostalgia. The Southern Ground Pounders Vintage Racing Club will add to that sense when they invade on Sunday night, May 29th as part of the Inaugural Interstate Batteries Memorial Classic.
The Southern Ground Pounders Vintage Racing Club consists of two classes of vintage racecars – Vintage Sportsman and Vintage Modified. The club races at tracks in South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia, bring memories of the past to fans of the present. However, it’s not just the cars that are the show with the Southern Ground Pounders.
The drivers competing in the Southern Ground Pounders don’t just stand on ceremony or ride around the track. The racing in the Southern Ground Pounders is often times some of the most entertaining racing at any venue they go to and club president Mack Tatum expects Sunday night’s race to be just as entertaining as the rest.
“The Southern Ground Pounders had a great time last year racing there on one of their first nights,” Tatum said. “We have several guys who didn’t make it last year who will be there this time.”
Tatum, who is a racer himself, feels Carteret County Speedway and the nostalgia theme at the track is the perfect venue for the Southern Ground Pounders.
“It is a great place for us especially cool with the moonshiner theme and restaurant in infield. I won the race last year but expect a ton of fast cars this year at the event,” Tatum remarked. “All the members in club are very excited about the return trip down there next week. I love the flat surface as it really puts the feel of the car in the driver’s hands. It kind of makes you feel on the edge all the time. What a great facility. One of the nicest tracks we run at.”
The Southern Ground Pounders will compete for 30 laps and will be the second of seven feature races in Sunday night’s Interstate Batteries Memorial Classic. The race is headlined by a 75 lap, $2,500-to-win Late Model race. There will also be racing for the Street Stocks, Mini Stocks, U-CARs, Legends and Bandoleros.
